From a Worker to a Writer (Bodh Prasang)

If I ask you a question whether there is a maid who works in the house and does the work of cleaning the utensils. Can you think that she could ever become a famous writer? Your answer will be – no, but 33 year old Devi Haldar, who lives in Gurgaon (Hari), has been able to reach her goal by facing the biggest difficulties with her dedication, hard work and determination. Born in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, Devi Haldar was left behind by her mother in her childhood. The father did two more marriages and at the behest of Dimata, at the age of twelve and a half years, married a young man who was twice his age.

Maby Haldar was very fond of reading, but she was able to study till the seventh grade and she had a child at the age of 13. As soon as she got married, she became a mother. Time progressed and as soon as the third child was born, without informing the husband, he got his family planning done. Hence at the age of playing with children, the lady had to raise her own children and by any chance out of her own free will, she did something as simple as speaking, She had to face her husband’s kicks and abuses on the matter.

Once she had gone to worship at her childhood friend’s house, the husband came there and started abusing her by pulling her hair. She was so hurt by this humiliation that she did not return to her home again. From there she went straight to her maternal home and got her children called to her place. Baby Haldar clearly told her father that she would stand on her own feet there and teach the children. When the father insisted that she should go back, she took her three children and set out on an unknown path. With her sisters in Faridabad not being supportive, Devi Haldar worked as a maid in a house with children. After a few days she found work in another house.

There was very little work in that house. In this house, she was noticed by the owner, turning the books while moving them to their places. Knowing her interest in books, the owner gave permission to take the books and asked to write one page daily. He

Considering it as the work of her master, she started writing her experience on the paper.

Initially the language mistakes were messy sentences, but gradually his hand opened up, when a part was written, the owner sent it to the magazine named Interview for publication and got printed and the article received good response from the readers. Seeing her name in the magazine Haldar’s courage increased. From childhood till now, she started writing everything about her natural experience. Those experiences in “Aalo Aadhar (Light and Darkness)” written in Bengal are in front of free readers. This book has been translated into English, Hindi, Marathi and that author is now standing in the category of best selling books. The recognizable owner is Prabodh Kumar, grandson of the famous Premchand Munshi.

Debi Haldar is teaching by sending children to schools along with jobs and not spending her earning money on herself. Spending on the education of the girl child. The landlord has given her to live with his family on the upper floor. Baby Haldar is invited by various literary organizations to seminars and they honor her for getting the book released. Many magazines keep publishing her articles. She is interviewed on Doordarshan on International Women’s Day, but even after receiving so much respect, Baby Haldar has not stopped working in the house of her master and patron.
